For Alacia Ledua, despite struggling to be the bread-winner for her family, their happiness is all that matters at the end of the day.

The Fiji Sun caught up with Ms Ledua, 49, at the Nadi Handicraft market this week while she was making a salusalu (garland) in her stall.

She has been a handicraft vendor for 22 years, she first started by assisting her aunt, Verenaisi Caba who was the owner of the handicraft stall.

“This stall belonged to my aunty and I used to help her out when she began her business 22 years ago,” she said.

Before Ms Caba’s passing last year, she handed over her business to Ms Ledua to take over. This has allowed her to earn and provide for the needs of her family.

“Running this business is also a way of remembering her. My husband, Aisea Ledua, is not working, I have five kids and at the moment I am the breadwinner of my family but sometimes my husband helps me.”

The Yasawa native said although at times, finding income for her family may be difficult, her children help out when they can.

“Something that touches my heart is that we know we are struggling and when my children find small work to do for at least a month or so, they give me their income to help with the grocery shopping.

“No matter the struggle we face we are still happy at the end of the day because we got God with us, if there is no God with us we will have a hard life.”

Ms Ledua added that having daily devotions was also an important part in her family’s life.
