Tracking down scammers is a battle that requires collective action.

This was highlighted by the Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Cooperatives, SMEs, and Communications, Manoa Kamikamica at the National Scam Awareness Week in Suva.

Mr Kamikamica said the awareness initiative represented a pivotal moment in Fiji’s fight against fraudulent activities, with support from the governments of Australia, New Zealand, and the European Union (EU).

During National Scam Awareness Week, the UN, Pacific Digital Economy Programme, Australia, New Zealand, and the EU launched new initiatives.

The Permanent Secretary for Trade, Cooperatives, SMEs, and Communications, Shaheen Ali, stressed the importance of international collaboration in enhancing Fiji’s digital resilience in his opening remarks,

“The invaluable support from our partners Australia, New Zealand, and the European Union towards National Scam Awareness Week has been instrumental in creating awareness and identifying strategies to strengthen Fiji’s digital defenses,” Mr Ali said.

“The continued commitment to Fiji through UNCDF’s Pacific Digital Economy Programme is a testament to our partners’ recognition of its critical importance.”

The EU’s commitment to bolstering Fiji’s digital and financial capacity was also a key focus during the opening session.

Mr Pedro Velazquez, head of the Section for Civil Society, Gender, Human Rights, and Health, highlighted the EU’s dedication to fostering digital resilience across the Pacific region.

Mr Velazquez said their objective was to strengthen digital and financial capacities at the community, industry, and policy levels.

“The same commitment is evident here in Fiji. This is why the European Union is collaborating with the governments of Australia and New Zealand through UNCDF,” Mr Velazquez said.

“And this is also why we have been a strong supporter of this inaugural National Scam Awareness Week.”
