The late Ratu Epeli Nailatikau is being remembered not only as a national leader, but as a caring family man who remained grounded despite holding the highest office in the country.

Watisoni Mudu of Bua, who has maternal links to Vanuabalavu in Lau and is related to Ratu Epeli’s wife, Adi Koila Mara Nailatikau, said Ratu Epeli’s humility and compassion defined him in both public and private life.

“Ratu Epeli was a good man,” Mr Mudu said. “Even as President, he returned to the village, cared for people, and always looked out for others.”

He said the former President valued family deeply and maintained close ties with relatives, regardless of status or distance.

“He always looked out for his family and mingled freely with people,” he said. “He never set himself apart because of his position. He was very down to earth.”

Mr Mudu said Ratu Epeli’s upbringing, overseas education, and strong cultural roots shaped a leader who balanced global experience with local understanding.

“He had seen the world, but never forgot where he came from,” he said. “That’s what made him special. He respected everyone.”

Beyond his official role, he is remembered for his humility, kindness, and ability to unite people. Those who knew him say he carried himself with quiet dignity, yet remained approachable, always willing to listen, share a story, or offer support.

Mr Mudu said news of his passing came as a shock.

“When I heard, I didn’t believe it,” he said. “It was hard to accept because he was someone strong — someone we all looked up to.”

He said the late leader’s life should remind people of the value of humility, service, and respect.

As tributes continue, Mr Mudu said Ratu Epeli would be remembered not just for the offices he held, but for the way he treated people — with care, openness, and a deep sense of responsibility to both family and nation.
