Life at home without electricity failed to dampen Rajnita Goundar’s sprits.
She actually became the beacon of light of her family when she was inducted as the head girl of Nakasi High School.
Serving in a leadership position was not a new responsibility for the 18-year-old.
“It was not an easy task. The biggest difficulty I’ve endured is living without electricity for the past 11 years,” she said.
“It became more difficult to study during rainy weather. We had to use lamps to study.
“I also used the mobile torch or candles to study. It was really hard, but my parents supported me and we got through it.”
Being the first in her family to become a head girl, she has now set her sights to become an aircraft engineer and improve her family’s standard of living.
“My dad is a truck driver and my mum does domestic duties. My father is currently unemployed,” she said.
“I am planning to take my parents out of the place where we are living.
“I want them to have a better life and live in a proper house with what they want.”
Becoming a leader in school is an achievement that she dedicated to her parents.
“I have been badged as a leader for the last four years and even in primary school,” she said.
“The hardship faced by my parents is what motivated me to do my best in school.
“There were a lot of hurdles in my life, but we all supported each other.”
Goundar said the task ahead was challengin because this was one of the most crucial years of high school.
“There will be students who might dislike me as a head girl, but I will try my best to be firm and fair,” she said.
Her advice to students: “Continue working hard despite the challenges.”
Meanwhile, head boy Priyanshu Goundar hoped to inspire other students.
“I want to be a person who motivates others to do well in life,” he said.
“I think a leader should be motivational to their peers and have a passion to do their task.”
His advice to students was to do what they could do best to inspire others.
He dedicated his achievements to his teachers and parents.
