At just 13, Epi Saqabobo stood out at the Lomary Primary School graduation in Serua today, not only as a student, but as a symbol of quiet strength and resilience.

The Year 8 student from Batiki, Lomaiviti, received the prestigious Head Teacher’s Award, one of the school’s highest honours recognising leadership, character and commitment to learning.

For Epi, the award carried deep personal meaning. In Term 2 this year, he lost his father, a tragedy that reshaped his life and the responsibilities he now carries.

He continues to visit his late father’s farm to gather food for the family.

“Every time I go there, it hurts me to see all the things he has planted,” he said.

His mother, Unaisi Buiika, works long hours at True Mart, Grace Road Kitchen in Navua, and Epi has become her support at home while maintaining his focus on school.

Despite his loss, he has excelled academically and in sport, representing Lomary Primary and the Serua Athletics team.

When Epi walked up to receive the Head Teacher’s Award, the hall erupted in applause, with some parents moved to tears as the Master of Ceremony described the challenges he faces.

For Epi, the award marks the beginning of a journey he hopes will honour the father he still carries in his heart.
