As the festive season approaches, the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Protection is reminding the public that support services are available and accessible.

“If you or someone you know is having problems, please reach out for help,” said Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection, Sashi Kiran.

She called on anyone experiencing violence, or who knows someone at risk, to take action and seek support.

The reminder comes after the tragic loss of several women and young girls in recent weeks, which has deeply saddened communities across Fiji.

Ms Kiran expressed the Ministry’s condolences:

“We extend our heartfelt sympathy to the family of 16-year-old Salote Sakiti from Naqali Village, the family of Anandi Devi in Ba, the family of 18-year-old Venina Cirikeba Cava in Lautoka, and the family of the woman in Veisari, Lami, who was tragically killed by her husband. Every one of these lives mattered, and their loss is deeply felt by their families and communities.”

She stressed that “No woman or girl should have to live in fear,” adding that family members, friends, and neighbours have a responsibility to intervene if they see violence or suspect someone is in danger.

“Acting early can save lives,” Ms Kiran said.

The Ministry provided the following helpline numbers for anyone in need:

  • Domestic Violence Toll-Free Helpline: 1560
  • Child Helpline: 1325
  • Empower Pacific: 5626

These helplines are staffed by trained counsellors who can provide advice, support, and guidance.

The Ministry urged communities to speak out against violence, protect the safety of women and children, and look out for one another.

“Let us all care for one another, speak out against violence, and protect the safety of women and girls in our communities. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of those who have lost their lives.”
