Prime Minister, Voreqe Bainimarama, has broken his silence and said Fijians cannot forever rely on the Government for development works that could be easily funded by community members.

He made the comment after the Ba women’s group made a request to Government for a laptop and projector at the Ba Provincial Council meeting in Sorokoba Village, Ba yesterday.

Mr Bainimarama immediately urged men in the province of Ba to help the women out on issues they could easily solve.

The items were said to aid in various development trainings of rural women.

He said the provision of a laptop could be simply solved by men through monetary contributions.

Given that there were thousands of men from the province, he said a contribution as low as a dollar could accommodate the cost of a laptop.

“Help them out,” he said.

Mr Bainimarama said it was important for people to have a common ground where an issue as such could be discussed so bigger and more complicated issues that required thousands of dollars could be spearheaded by the Government.

Two major issues discussed at the meeting were the electrification of rural communities and better road conditions, which the Government said it would look into.

Mr Bainimarama shed light on agriculture to help the province fund intended projects and livelihoods.

“Ba Province has reaped the rewards, literally, of our concerted investment and targeted assistance in the agricultural sector,” he said.

“More than $1 million has been spent on programmes for crop extension, rural outer islands and livestock.”

Mr Bainimarama said that the Government would try to break every record it could and cooperation from fellow Fijians was needed.

“We know where we’re heading and it’s towards building a better Fiji for everyone."

“We have been doing it since the day we entered Government, and we will keep doing it,” he said.
