The heroic efforts of two caretakers to save a 59-year-old man from a house fire at Ross Street at Nausori Town were in vain.

A police report yesterday said the elderly man died from burns allegedly sustained during the fire that razed his corrugated iron home on Tuesday.

Kemueli Seeto, 20 and Viliame Elia, 25 were doing their daily chores when they were notified by a passerby of a fire in the neighbourhood.

“We jumped over the fence to get to the house, but by the time we arrived at the scene, we could feel the heat from the flames,” he said.

The duo tried to open the grill door from where they sighted the man standing.

“When we couldn’t open the burning grill door, we tried to smash it down so we could get the old man out,” Mr Elia said.

“We took him by the collar of his T-shirt and threw him out of the house, hoping to get the fire out by rolling over in the ground.”

“I ran to the parish hall and got a blanket which we wrapped him in and carried him to the street to get help,” he said.

Police and National Fire Authority personnel are investigating the cause of fire.
