Public Service Commission (PSC) chair Luke Rokovada says, the PSC is focusing on the reinstatement of the higher salaries commission.

This he said included the review of exorbitant salaries paid out by the service to the public sector, in particular organisations outside of the civil service.

These include government statutory organisations.

“We found out that salaries, particularly in the public sector renumeration salaries and also organisations outside of the civil service, but still within the public sectors like government owned companies had little coordination or little control on the salaries,” Mr Rokovada said.

“Each organisation was like competing who pays the highest,” he said.

“I don’t think that is good for the country and the stability of the country because there is little control and coordination on that.”

Mr Rokovada said the reinstatement of the higher salary commission would be done this year.

“The act has already been passed and the new commission should be appointed this year,” he said.

Mr Rokovada said there was also a new contract system for permanent secretaries that has been rolled out since last year.

This includes public service values, code of conduct and a new performance management framework for monitoring and evaluating their performance.

“We ensure that they are working cooperatively with their ministers, and we also have a role in ensuring that PS’s perform,” he said.

He said the PSC was evaluating the performance of permanent secretaries.
