Fiji recorded 46 HIV-related deaths last year - the highest ever in the region and for Fiji.

This worrying revelation was made by the Minister for Health and Medical Services, Dr Atonio Lalabalavu, in Parliament last night.

During the budget debate, Dr Atonio said it was alarming that Fiji's

HIV infection increased by 129 per cent over the last decade.

According to the U.N. AIDS Global Report, the minister said Fiji was now one of the top five countries out of a pool of 38 countries, with an alarming rise in infection rates.

During and after COVID-19, we seem to have shifted our focus away from this deadly disease – HIV, said Dr Atonio.

“However, According to the UN AIDS Report, Fiji is rated 2nd in the Asia-Pacific region with the fastest growing HIV infection and recording 46 HIV related deaths last year – which is also the highest in the region and for Fiji,” he said.

“In 2022, Fiji recorded 245 cases of HIV compared to 151 cases in 2021, which is almost an increase of 100 per cent.
