A Tamavua homeowner and his neighbours stopped a burglar as the teenage home invader tried to make his escape yesterday morning.

Monit Kumar and his wife Sharon Prasad were asleep in their two-bedroom home when the burglar made his way inside the house.

Mr Kumar said the burglar had timed his mission perfectly because it was raining heavily. He said he and his wife slept in one room while the other room was empty.

He said the burglar entered through the window in the vacant room.

“He cut the grill and took the louvres out. He then picked my laptop bag. I keep my wallet, cards and car keys in this bag which is always on the table,” Mr Kumar said.

“He tried to open the front door but the grill was locked and the key for the grill was kept elsewhere. At this moment, my wife woke up and saw the invader.

“She woke me up. I confronted the man who was trying to escape and held his hands.”

Mr Kumar said his neighbours came to his aid and together they apprehended the alleged culprit.

“I was told by neighbours that the young man was often seen walking around the area during odd hours,” he said.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said an 18-year-old suspect was caught during the alleged crime.

“The report is being investigated by Valelevu Police Station and the suspect is currently admitted at the CWM Hospital in stable conditions for observation of the injuries sustained during the incident,” she said.
