The Housing Authority has begun allocating 101 subsidised model homes at the Nepani Subdivision, marking a renewed effort to expand access to affordable housing for low-income families amid growing national demand.

The allocations were made through a barrel draw conducted today at the Housing Authority Head Office in Valelevu, overseen by officials from the Ministry of Housing, the Fiji Police Force and Housing Authority staff to ensure transparency and fairness.

Housing Authority chief executive officer Isikeli Navuda said the Nepani Model Homes project signalled a major shift in how the Authority supports housing needs.

“Today is significant. After more than three decades, the Housing Authority has resumed building homes again. The 101 model homes at Nepani are just the beginning. We are committed to expanding this programme and providing more families with safe, affordable housing,” Mr Navuda said.

The development comprises 101 two-bedroom homes, with the Authority subsidising land and construction costs by $2.9 million, in addition to Government support through the Housing Assistance Grant, to ensure affordability for the target market.

Mr Navuda said the response to the Expression of Interest issued last year reflected the scale of unmet housing needs across the country.

“While only 101 homes are being allocated today, we envisage producing up to 400 additional homes by the end of this year. These homes, which will be 2-bedroom and 3-bedroom homes are designed to meet the real needs of families—providing not just shelter, but stability, dignity, and a foundation for a better future,” he said.

The barrel draw followed a screening, selection and objection process to ensure accountability. Successful applicants will now move to the next stage, including receiving offer letters and accessing applicable Government housing grants in partnership with the Ministry of Housing and Local Government.

Housing Authority general manager finance and administration Poasa Verevakabau said the milestone reflected strong institutional collaboration.

“This milestone reflects strong collaboration between the Housing Authority Board, management, staff, committees, and our key stakeholders. Together, we are turning our mandated housing plans into reality and building stronger communities,” he said.

The Nepani Model Homes project is the first phase of the Authority’s revived home-building programme, aimed at easing housing pressures and improving living standards for Fijian families.
