The NGO Coalition on Human Rights in Fiji (NGOCHR) has raised serious concerns over reports that Israel plans to open an embassy in Fiji in April 2026.

In a statement, the coalition said the move follows Fiji’s recent diplomatic alignment with Israel and could undermine Fiji’s long-standing commitment to international law, human rights and multilateralism.

NGOCHR said the status of Jerusalem remains unresolved under international law, citing United Nations resolutions and advisory opinions of the International Court of Justice that caution states against actions that could be seen as recognising unlawful occupation.

The coalition said that at a time when United Nations bodies and international human rights organisations continue to document alleged violations of international humanitarian and human rights law in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, Fiji’s decision to host an Israeli embassy risks being perceived as tacit endorsement or complicity.

NGOCHR said Fiji has historically supported principles of peace, decolonisation and respect for international law, and warned the diplomatic shift could weaken the country’s moral standing internationally.

The coalition has called on the Government to reconsider the decision and to recommit to a foreign policy grounded in justice, accountability and respect for international law.
