I served as Fiji’s Prime Minister with integrity and for the best of all Fijians.

These were the words of former Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama following his abuse of office court case at the Magistrates Court in Suva on Friday.

Mr Bainimarama said: “I have been served this charge, charge against my legacy. So, I am going

to fight this charge not only for my reputation, but for democracy for all Fijians and for our Constitution.”

Bainimarama and suspended Commissioner of Police, Brigadier-General Sitiveni Qiliho, were brought from Totogo Police Station after being detained overnight on Thursday.

Bainimarama and Qiliho are each charged with one count of abuse of office.

The Charges:

Bainimarama sometime in the month of July 2020, at Suva as the Prime Minister of Fiji, directed Commissioner of Police to stop investigations into the Police complaint involving CID/HQ PEP 12/07/2019, in the abuse of the authority of his office, which was an arbitrary act prejudicial to the rights of the University of the South Pacific, which is the complainant in CID/HQ PEP 12/07/2019.
