A new five-week induction programme has been introduced to address abuse of power and corruption within the Immigration Department, says Minister for Immigration Viliame Naupoto.
Speaking in an interview, Mr Naupoto said the training is designed to strengthen professionalism and improve ethical standards among officers.
He said one of the key issues identified was confusion between authority and power, which has contributed to misconduct in the past.

“As a former Director of Immigration, I have seen how the misuse of power can lead to corruption,” he said.
Mr Naupoto said officers sometimes exercised their authority incorrectly when making decisions on entry into the country.
The programme, the first of its kind, is being delivered with support from Australia and New Zealand and brings together both newly recruited and experienced officers.
He said the aim was to ensure a consistent understanding of roles and responsibilities across the department.
Mr Naupoto said the training would focus on building trust and respect while reinforcing ethical conduct, which is critical in safeguarding border security and national integrity.
He said the initiative is expected to improve knowledge and produce more competent officers better equipped to carry out their duties responsibly.
The induction programme forms part of broader efforts to strengthen governance within immigration services and ensure officers uphold high standards in their roles.
