Increase in crime against women
89 per cent of the reports were assault-related, while 11 per cent were sexual offences.

Crimes against women recorded an increase of 19 per cent for the month of April, while crimes against children dropped by 4 per cent.
The statistics were highlighted by the Police Commissioner, Rusiate Tudravu, during his monthly press conference yesterday.
Of the 233 cases of crimes against women received, 47 per cent were committed in domestic settings, mostly by spouses or partners.

Women from the ages of 18-38 were predominantly high in numbers.
“With crimes against children and women often associated as emotional crimes, we will continue to seek public support in identifying and tackling the root causes of these moral crimes,” Mr Tudravu said.
“We have engaged with vanua and religious-based groups, and it is our hope that we will continue to strengthen all efforts towards protection of our women and children.”
