An investigation by the National Fire Authority (NFA) is underway to determine the cause of the fire at a warehouse in Lami belonging to Pacific Batteries Pte Limited.

In a statement, NFA’s acting chief executive officer Mileta Seniroqa said at 10.44pm on Friday night, the Suva Fire Station was alerted through a fire emergency call and they immediately responded.

“Upon arrival at 10.51pm, the fire team saw Pacific Batteries PTE Ltd’s warehouse engulfed in flames.

“The Fire team quickly used multiple deliveries of water from their fire trucks and fire hydrant supply to extinguish the fire and stop it from spreading to two adjacent buildings to the warehouse.

“It is understood that the fire started from the middle of the warehouse where car batteries and other stock to manufacture the batteries are stored.”

She said the warehouse contained many flammable materials such as gas and copper, that could have contributed to the fire.

Seventeen firefighters and five NFA officers attended the fire scene.

Pacific Batteries production manager Ashnil Deo confirmed the incident, but declined to comment further as investigations continue.
