The Fiji Airways Airbus A350-900 aircraft involved in an alleged ground hit-and-run incident at Los Angeles International Airport last Thursday ‘is under control’.

Minister for Education, Tourism and Civil Aviation Viliame Gavoka this after the aircraft (registered DQ-FAI) was parked at a remote stand and sustained significant damage to its right outer elevator (tail section) after the alleged collision with Asiana Airlines A380.

There was no passengers or crew onboard at the time of the incident.

“That is under control, the question is A380 (Asiana Airlines) allegedly came into the A350 area and it is their fault,” Mr Gavoka said.

“There is insurance to cover,” he said.

“The beauty about it is that Fiji Airways has a backup aircraft that will cater for that route, minimising the disruptions.”

He said the aircraft was now undergoing repairs and Fiji Airways would be participating in an investigation by Los Angeles World Airports, which owns and operates the Los Angeles International Airport.

Mr Gavoka was not able to reveal when the aircraft would be expected to return to flight.

Meanwhile, it is reported that the Asiana Airlines A380 continued its journey to Korea without acknowledging or noticing the collision.
