A stable Internet connection has brought us out from the darkness to the light.

These were the sentiments shared by Wailevu East District School head teacher, Ruci Vakadranu, during the visit of the Acting Prime Minister, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum to the school on Tuesday.

This visit was part of the Northern Connectivity Project where wifi-enabled internet connection was installed in schools, nursing stations, police posts etc.

Ms Vakadranu said the internet connection was a major challenge for their students previously as credible information was scarce.

She said they would now be able to improve their teaching process where students could readily access information from the comfort of their school environment.

“Our teachers can now easily attend zoom meetings and provide technical support to our students,” she said.

“We will also try incorporating videos and print materials in creating COVID-19 awareness for our students, who can in return educate their adults on these protocols”.

Meanwhile, Mr Sayed-Khaiyum, reiterated connectivity was part of their broader aim to ensure all fijians had access to credible information. He urged students and communities, living within the vicinity to always ensure the best and correct use of this resource.

Wailevu East Primary School became the sixth school during the Acting PM’s visit to have Wifi enabled internet connection available.

On the day before, the Acting PM, accompanied by Assistant Minister for Youth and Sports Alvick Maharaj, Divisional Planning Officer Northern Setareki Dakuiboca commissioned internet connectivity for Lutukina District School.

He said that while development was in progress everywhere, it is unfair for those that live in rural and remote places, therefore it is the Governments to facilitate their needs leaving no one behind.

The cost of the connectivity is over a million dollars for the 40 schools in the Northern Division.

Lutukina District School head teacher, Inoke Raiwalui said it was a historical event ever since the school was established in 1963, serving three villages – Waiqalutu, Drawa, Lutukkna – and six settlements.

The school currently has 119 students enrolled, with five teachers.
