Community leaders on Cikobia Island in the Northern Division have adopted a firm stance against illicit drug use.

They have warned that individuals or families found to be involved in the trade or consumption of illegal substances will be required to leave the island.

Mata ni Tikina Cikobia, Jasa Ratumuri, told delegates at the Macuata Provincial Council meeting in Nabouono Village, Udu, that island authorities were taking a firm action plan to protect their communities and children from the growing influence of drugs.

“Families found dealing with drugs will be driven out of the island if they are caught,” Mr Ratumuri said.

Cikobia, which lies in Fiji’s northern waters and forms part of Macuata Province, is home to four villages; Vatulele, Nautovatu, Nalele, and Vuninuku.

Mr Ratumuri said the island had already taken similar measures last year, reminding families that drug involvement would not be tolerated.

“Marijuana is still a major concern for us on the island, as well as white drugs such as white powder and the use of needles,” he said.

“We are concerned about our children’s health and the future of Cikobia Island.”

The island community will not back down in its campaign to eradicate drugs, stressing that the safety and well-being of future generations must come first.
