Member of Parliament Lynda Tabuya has hit back at criticism, over the timing of her newly announced charitable foundation, insisting it is not a political move ahead of the 2026 General Election.

Ms Tabuya announced the launch of the Lynda Tabuya Foundation on her Facebook page last Saturday, describing it as a “private, grassroots-driven philanthropic organisation” aimed at supporting women, children, and vulnerable communities across Fiji.

The foundation, however, is still awaiting formal registration with the Registrar of Titles.

While many reacted positively to the announcement, others questioned the motives behind its launch so close to the next general election.

“This has been a long time coming for me,” Ms Tabuya said.

“I’ve been trying to do this since 2023, but I was quite busy as a minister. Now that I have more time to dedicate to the people of Fiji as a member of parliament, I am able to proceed to register for the foundation.”

She said the foundation was a continuation of the charitable work she has funded from her own income.

“I think for me as a public figure and a member of parliament, it’s important that I hold myself accountable and be transparent about where my salary goes in terms of my public outreach and community work. That’s important,” she said, adding that 100 per cent of her salary since 2018 has been used to support community initiatives.

The foundation is expected to have its soft launch this week, beginning with the hand-over of uniforms sponsored by Ms Tabuya for the Mid-Central Volleyball Alliance in Nasinu.
