A quote on leadership is a guiding principle for Nawai Secondary School headboy, Shavinesh Nand, and headgirl Sweta Shivani, who were inducted last Friday .

“Leaders become great, not because of their power, but because of their ability to empower others. They set out to make a difference. It’s not about the role; it’s always about the goal,” Shavinesh quoted while addressing the audience during the school’s induction ceremony on Friday.

Shavinesh said before being a leader, success was all about growing yourself. But when you become a leader success is all about growing others, he said. He scored the school’s second highest mark in the Fiji Year 12 Certificate Examination – 352 out of 400.

Sweta Shivani was the deputy headgirl last year and loved to take on challenges.

“Leaders are not born they are made just like anything else through their hard work,” she said.

She scored the school’s highest mark in the Fiji Year 12 Certificate Examination – 368 out of 400 marks.

Chief guest and Nadroga/Navosa education officer Shalendra Rao told the prefects that things would not be normal after the induction.

“Things are bound to change. Probably today will be the last day for you to favour your friends, because your status and respect as a student will change from tomorrow. You are no longer a student, you are a leader,” he said.

“Being selected as a leader will give you lots of authority and power, but you must know how to use them. With great power comes great responsibility. And when you misuse your powers you will lose your integrity, which will be the starting point of your fall.

“It takes ages to earn the respect and trust of people, but it takes seconds to destroy that.”

Mr Rao said the teachers had seen their attitude, behaviour and scholastic achievements and agreed that the selected prefects be given a leadership role among peers.

“Being given this recognition and trust over others is not a responsibility that one should take lightly. Such trust should never be abused, instead it should be channelled to engage, motivate and inspire those you are responsible for; to be the best they can be academically as well as at the personal level,” he said.
