Labasa Town Council special administrator chairperson Paul Jaduram has urged the public to support the temporary closure of Labasa Airport, saying the disruption is necessary to allow critical runway upgrades.

Jaduram said the airport will be closed from February 16 to March 27, 2026, to carry out runway pavement strengthening works aimed at improving access and aviation safety.

“I know people may be upset about the closure, but it is needed,” he said.

“We have to sacrifice for a few weeks so that access can be improved, which is really necessary.”

During the six-week closure, Savusavu Airport will remain operational and serve as the alternative travel option for Labasa residents.

Jaduram acknowledged the closure would result in additional travel costs, particularly for people commuting between Labasa and Savusavu, and appealed to airlines to consider reducing fares during the period.

“I am sure the airline may reduce the fare for people from Labasa, and I hope they will seriously consider this,” he said.

“It is a request on behalf of the people of Labasa.”

He said that while the closure would cause short-term inconvenience, it would bring long-term benefits to the Northern Division.

“If airlines can work with bus companies, it will help people travel from Labasa to Savusavu to catch their flights,” he said.

Labasa Airport is scheduled to close for six weeks, from February 16 to March 27, 2026, for runway upgrade works designed to improve safety and connectivity in the region.
