The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) will receive oil spill prevention equipment worth approximately FJ$1.6million.

On Friday the Embassy of Japan’s counsellor and deputy head of mission, Tanaka Kenichiro, signed an exchange of notes with the Minister of Public Works, Transport, and Meteorological Services, Ro Filipe Tuisawau.

Mr Tanaka said it was the first Japanese grant assistance provided to MSAF.

“MSAF will receive the oil spill equipment and related accessories, including towing vehicles,” Mr Tanaka said.

“I understand that the new oil spill equipment will be utilised in Levuka, Labasa, Lautoka, and Suva ports to support one of MSAF’s mandated responsibilities, which is to protect Fiji’s marine environment.”

Mr Tuisawau said the signing was a testament to the enduring partnership and shared values that have bound the two countries together for years.

“It represents a commitment to the ideals of international cooperation and collaboration, which support the belief that when two nations work together, they can overcome challenges and create a better world,” Mr Tuisawau said.

“The Government of Japan has consistently demonstrated its unwavering commitment to the well-being and development of our nation. Japan’s generosity has been a lifeline in times of need, not only for the occasion today but in various other development projects.

“Their support has enabled us to embark on important projects to improve the lives of our citizens.”
