The Judicial Services Commission (JSC) was unable to convene its meeting yesterday afternoon after failing to meet the required quorum.

Under Section 104(10) of the 2013 Constitution, a quorum requires the presence of the chairperson, Chief Justice Salesi Temo, and two other members.

However, Chief Justice Temo was in a separate meeting yesterday afternoon in a room adjacent to the Judges’ Chambers.

Those present yesterday included:

  • President of the Court of Appeal Isikeli Mataitoga
  • Permanent secretary for Justice Selina Kuruleca
  • Fiji Council of Social Services director Vani Catanasiga
  • Fiji Law Society appointee and litigator Shoma Devan
  • Chief Registrar Tomasi Bainivalu

Mr Bainivalu confirmed the JSC is expected to sit again on March 25, with the commission committed to reaching a decision by March 31.

The meeting was expected to include discussions and provide direction on the future leadership of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), including matters relating to commissioner Lavi Rokoika and her predecessor Barbara Malimali.
