The Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development is prioritising improved road access and tackling drug cultivation in Kadavu, District Officer for Kavala, Iferemi Boserau, has said.

Mr Boserau highlighted that villagers in Yale district face significant challenges due to poor road infrastructure, with most communities reachable only by sea.

“Lack of road access is a major issue for the people of Yale. Most villages are only accessible by sea, so the ministry is working closely with the Fiji Roads Authority and other government agencies to address this,” he said.

He also flagged the rising cultivation of marijuana in Kadavu, particularly in the upper northern areas.

“One way the ministry is combating this is through agriculture. Strengthening the agricultural sector can provide sustainable income opportunities that steer people away from illegal drug farming,” Mr Boserau said.

He stressed the importance of providing farmers with training and alternative farming options.

“We are working closely with the Fiji Police Force to fight marijuana cultivation through legitimate agriculture. Kadavu’s fertile land offers opportunities for productive farming,” he said.

Mr Boserau also noted that access to clean water remains a challenge for many villages in Yale, with only Naoji currently enjoying a steady supply.

To improve water storage, the ministry recently installed two 5000-litre water tanks in the area.

“We believe these tanks mark a new milestone for Kadavu and Yale. They will significantly improve water access and storage for local communities,” he said.

Mr Boserau reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to improving basic infrastructure and promoting sustainable livelihoods across Kadavu.
