Veronika Milika Tokona has broken barriers in a trade where women are rarely seen.
Today, she became the only female to graduate with a National Certificate in Carpentry from the Centre for Appropriate Technology and Development (CATD) in Nadave, Tailevu.
Originally from Solotavui, Nakasaleka, Kadavu, Ms Tokona faced the challenge of studying in Viti Levu while her parents remained on the island. The distance tested her strength, but her determination never wavered.

“Sometimes I felt alone, but I kept reminding myself why I started to make my family proud and to build a better future for myself,” she shared.
For Ms Tokona, choosing carpentry was more than a career path. It was a statement. She admitted that some doubted her ability because carpentry is often seen as a man’s job. But instead of backing down, she pressed forward.
“At first, some people doubted me, but I told myself I could do it. Every nail I hammered, every lesson I learned, I was one step closer to my dream,” she said.
Her graduation marks not just personal success but also a step forward for women in trades. Milika now hopes to return to Kadavu and put her skills to use in her community.
“I want to go back and build homes, not just for my family but for others who need it. My goal is to start my own carpentry business one day,” she said with confidence.
Her story is one of resilience and courage, proving that with determination, even the toughest barriers can be broken.
