From the archipelago, known for its rich marine biodiversity, Ono-i-Lau, where Helen Fifita Kava was raised, the seeds of ambition were sown early.

The sixth of eleven children in a technically inclined family, Ms Kava has always been inspired by problem-solving and resilience.

As a successful Civil engineer and Chief Executive Officer of Sealand Works PTE Limited, she is dedicated to developing sustainable infrastructure that serves her community.

Reflection

Reflecting on her journey, Ms Kava said, “I have always wanted to be part of the SOLUTION.”

She draws inspiration from the legacy of women in engineering, particularly Emily Roebling, who played a pivotal role in completing the Brooklyn Bridge in 1883 despite her husband’s illness.

“Women have contributed to so many successful projects around the world,” She said, recognising the long history of female resilience in a male-dominated field.

Yet, Ms Kava’s path has not been without challenges.

She faced gender bias that often questioned her energy and strength in her duties.

“Doubting my ability was a stumbling block,” she admits.

Family Support

Empowered by her passion for her work, She decided to break away and establish her own business in 2023 within her hometown of Ba, also known as “Soccer Crazy Town.”

With the support of her family, she took that courageous step towards entrepreneurship, challenging the barriers she faced.

With a vision rooted in empowerment, Ms Kava aims to employ as many women as she possibly can within her company.

Currently, she proudly boasts a workforce comprised of 40% women, with plans to increase this figure in the future.

Mentorship

“Mentorship advances women in STEM,” she said.

She also highlights the importance of networking, skills development, and emotional support.

“It creates a more welcoming atmosphere,” she adds, encouraging creativity and removing barriers to success.

Among the various projects Ms Kava is working on, the Varadoli project in Ba Town stands out.

This ambitious subdivision initiative encompasses 75 lots with designed roads, water systems, and drainage solutions.

She shares, “I’m proud of this project, and we’re on track for completion in June 2025.”

Time Management

Managing her time effectively is important, with her balancing her roles as CEO and mother.

“Time management is very important,” she adds, sharing her dedication to working late nights to ensure project success.

Leadership

As a leader, Ms Kava believes in the power of vulnerability.

“Our human experience is what motivates us,” she said.

She inspires others to grow into their leadership potential by embracing mistakes and sharing lessons learned.

“No one is perfect in this world, but we learn from our mistakes and move on.”

Looking back, she reflects on key lessons learned throughout her career.

“Be yourself, and continue to do what you love. Honour your commitments and be aware of how your work affects others.”

Her unwavering faith in herself and her ideas is a testament to her journey.

“Have courage and never give up,” she said.

Resilience

Embracing the spirit of resilience, she seeks to promote the next generation of female engineers.

Ms Kava’s story is not just about engineering structures; it’s about building a future where women thrive in STEM, breaking down barriers, and paving the way for sustainable solutions.
