Newly-badged Natabua High School headboy Rishav Kartik Prasad is being inspired to take up his new role of leadership by the late American president John F Kennedy.
And, in his speech to the school assembly on Thursday, Rishav echoed the full text of this famous President Kennedy quote: “Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other. One is the requisite of another; so to lead is to learn.”
Rishav, 18, recalled entering the school for the first time. He wondered what it would be like to be the school’s headboy. It all became a reality on Thursday.

“Four years ago, when I sat in the hall to witness my first investiture ceremony in Natabua High School, I wondered what it would be like to be the one receiving the badge of a student leader,” Rishav said.
“Today (Thursday), I experienced it firsthand. It is a feeling of overwhelming joy and a profound sense of respect for this great honour with which I have been bestowed.”
Rishav, who is from the sugar city of Lautoka, is positive that he will lead the students to a higher standard of both academic and sporting excellence.
“I know that at times the responsibilities of being student leaders may weigh heavily on our young shoulders. Sometimes at the expense of our academic success but I am confident that in 2018, we will achieve yet higher,” Rishav said.
“In order to do so, we must all work together for efficiency and effectiveness.”
Headgirl’s challenge
Natabua’s new headgirl is Adi Nanise Naivalu, 18, from Nacula, in the Yasawas.
She thanked the school for allowing her to be an integral part of the investiture ceremony on Thursday.
She said she was honoured to have been chosen from a group of dynamic young female students.
“To be given the opportunity to lead the student council this year, together with the headboy, will be an exciting yet challenging role,” Naninse said.
“Success requires team work and that involves both you and me,’’ she told the assembly.
“It is important to acknowledge that our success lies in drawing from each other’s strengths rather than overcoming challenges alone. And that applies to the whole school. We need each other.’’
This year Natabua inducted 140 prefects.
