Adapting to the new norms of recruitment during this pandemic is an important process students need to adhere to when seeking job prospects.

This was the advice from Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa’s Director of Learning and Development, Altaab Khan, during a Fiji National University (FNU) Careers Chat session.

Organised by the Office of the Registrar’s Department Student Support Services, the virtual series features industry experts who speak to students on a range of topics related to employment prospects and career advice.

Mr Khan is a learning and development specialist of more than 15 years, with vast experience in the service industry. He has worked as a service leader at Shangri-La’s Fiji Resort and Spa, training manager for Jack’s Group of Companies and group training manager for Tappoos Group of Companies in 2013.

During the virtual event, he spoke to about 60 student participants on how to prepare for a virtual recruitment interview.

Mr Khan also highlighted the changing policies and protocols recently announced concerning the pandemic.

He reminded students of the importance of being aware of one’s online engagement.

“We really should be mindful of what we say on social media, especially knowing that in addition to doing reference checks, some companies go through one’s social media account to gauge the type of person that they’re hiring for their organisation,” he said.

“How honest one has been on a CV will also be a reflection of their character and their work ethic.”

FNU Certificate III in Office Assistant student, Divya Swastika Swami, was inspired by the session and the advice provided.

Sigamoa Taufaga Biyau, who is undertaking a Bachelor of Commerce degree, said the session was enlightening and provided relevant information on emotional intelligence.
