Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection Sashi Kiran, has voiced serious concern over a video circulating on social media yesterday, which allegedly showed a child consuming alcohol.

The footage, which has caused widespread alarm, is a direct violation of Fiji’s laws aimed at protecting the rights and well-being of children.

“The incident is particularly troubling given the recent implementation of the Child Care and Protection Act 2024, which prioritises the safety and welfare of children,” Ms Kiran said.

Under the Act, children are granted special protection, and any action involving minors consuming alcohol is a breach of the legal framework that governs such behaviours.

“The legal drinking age in Fiji is 18 years old, and any action that involves children engaging with alcohol is a serious violation of this law,” she said.

“This is not only distressing but also a direct infringement on the legal protections afforded to children in this country.”

Ms Kiran highlighted a growing concern about the role of adults and caregivers in perpetuating harm to children - recent instances reveal that those entrusted with children’s care are the ones violating their rights.

“Children need our love and protection. They depend on adults to provide that safety,” she said.

“Unfortunately, it’s becoming more evident that some adults and carers are the very ones causing harm.”

Investigation

The Fiji Police Force has started an investigation into the incident, in collaboration with the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Protection to understand the circumstances surrounding the incident.

“We are taking this matter seriously,” Ms Kiran said.

“Any breaches of the law will be dealt with accordingly, and we will continue to work closely with law enforcement to ensure the protection of our children.”

She urged the public to refrain from sharing the video, instead report any concerns related to child welfare to the relevant authorities.”

“We all have a role to play in safeguarding the well-being of our children,” Ms Kiran said.

As the investigation unfolds, Ms Kiran reaffirmed Government’s commitment to upholding the rights of every child, pledging that further steps would be taken to address the situation appropriately and prevent such incidents in the future.
