Friends of Fiji Health, a New Zealand-based charitable organisation, recently completed nearly 20 complex surgeries at Labasa Divisional Hospital.

Since their first visit in 2014, the team of 12, including doctors, nurses, and specialised staff, has fostered a strong relationship with the hospital.

Arriving on July 26 and departing on August 4, the team, led by trustee Avinash Sharma, a general surgeon specialising in oncology, addressed a range of intricate cases, from head and neck to abdominal surgeries. “Patients aged between 50 and 100 were triaged and those in most urgent need were prioritized for surgery,” Mr Sharma explained.

The team consisted of three surgeons, an anaesthetist, and theatre staff, including three nurses and an anaesthetic technician.

Despite the variable number of operations performed daily, Mr Sharma noted their commitment to quality over quantity.

“Some cases took three to five hours per patient, but our goal is to provide the best possible care,” he said.

The team also donated high-tech medical equipment to Labasa Hospital, including anaesthetic machines, operating tables, and laparoscopy towers.

This donation aims to support future surgeries and improve local healthcare capabilities.

Sharma, originally from Lautoka, expressed pride in contributing to his homeland.

“We feel honoured to come back and serve the local community,” he said.

Dr Amrita Kumar, a general practitioner (GP) and team coordinator, echoed these sentiments.
