Koronivia site earmarked for families facing eviction in Suva

The site will accommodate families from Nabua Muslim League settlement and other informal settlements around Suva who have received eviction notices.
The Ministry of Housing and Local Government has identified a greenfield site near Koronivia, Nausori, to relocate families facing eviction from informal settlements.
Housing Minister Maciu Nalumisa told Parliament yesterday that preliminary infrastructure works — including road access, drainage, and utility connections — are already underway.
"I am pleased to inform this August House that the Ministry has identified a greenfield site near Koronivia, Nausori, for the relocation," Mr Nalumisa said.

The Ministry has allocated $2.2 million this financial year to identify and acquire suitable land, and is working with the iTaukei Land Trust Board and Ministry of Lands to finalize arrangements and provide legal clarity for relocated families.
"The relocation plan aims to prioritize access to essential services, security of tenure, and proximity to employment and educational hubs," Mr Nalumisa said.
More than 400 households in the Nabua Muslim League settlement were served eviction notices in December 2024 by the Fiji Muslim League, prompting government intervention.
A three-week socioeconomic survey has since been completed to assess tenants’ status and needs. Data from the survey is being reviewed to inform relocation strategies for Cabinet approval.
The Ministry is also drafting a relocation and resettlement policy to ensure families are adequately supported during the transition.
In addition, the government has allocated more than $900,000 to Habitat for Humanity Fiji to prepare scheme and engineering plans for land in Mokosoi, Pacific Harbour, including the construction of three houses.
