Koronubu Sangam School in Ba made a significant achievement after recording a 100 per cent pass rate in the Fiji Year 8 Examination.

The school, with a roll of 64 students, mostly from farming communities, is located 16 to 18 kilometres from Ba Town.

“It’s a rural school with mostly students from farming backgrounds. Most of their parents are labourers who go and harvest cane in the area, while there are a few students whose parents are farmers,” he said.

“We only have eight students in Year Eight, and all passed; the highest mark was 433 out of 500.

“It was not easy because, in the beginning, we had absenteeism and behavioural problems, but then we would do home visits and talk to parents, so it was a joint effort between us and parents that reaped dividends.”

Head teacher Rajesh Lal applauded the teachers and overall school management for their efforts to improve students’ academic performance.

“I am so proud that the school has achieved this target, and students studied hard while teachers also trusted the students to do well,” he said.

Mr Lal and his teachers plan to set the same target for this year’s examination.
