Among the highlights of her speech at Housing Authority of Fiji in Valelevu yesterday, Premila Kumar honoured the late Speaker of Parliament Dr Jiko Luveni for her foresight.

The Minister of Local Government, Housing and Community said: “I would also like to acknowledge our late Speaker.

“She was very instrumental in making sure that when an organisation prepare, its annual reports and they appear before the subcommittee, they had to give a breakdown of how many women were working in the organisations.

“These changes were there to make an organisation understand that women play an equal important role in building the organisation.”

With this year’s theme on Choose To Challenge, Ms Kumar said it was appropriate to acknowledge women, given the challenges with COVID-19.

She said women had the tendency to accept things as they come and the biases of the patriarchal society where men were treated differently to a woman.

“Slowly and surely, changes towards the appointment of women in leadership roles have evolved over the years,” she said.

“In any organisation, you’ll find more women in the support team rather than as a decision maker and I think this is something that women in business are trying to change to see how women have been represented in the organisation,” she said.
