Labasa Airport will reopen tomorrow (March 28) after six weeks of runway strengthening works, restoring a key air link for the Northern Division.

Fiji Airports confirmed the completion of the project, funded by the World Bank through the Na Vualiku Project, which upgraded the runway pavement to meet operational standards and improve aircraft movement.

The reopening is expected to improve safety, reliability and efficiency for passenger, airline and cargo services.

Operations will continue from the temporary terminal while work on the new terminal progresses.

Fiji Airports Chief Executive Mesake Nawari said the upgrade was a major investment in the North’s aviation infrastructure.

“The completion of the runway strengthening works at Labasa Airport ensures safer and more reliable operations, while also supporting economic growth and connectivity for the Northern Division,” Mr Nawari said.

“We thank all stakeholders and the people of Labasa for their patience and cooperation throughout the construction period.

“This development reflects Fiji Airports’ continued commitment to upgrading infrastructure and enabling sustainable growth across the country.”

Fiji Airports acknowledged the support of the mataqali Nabukarabe of Nakama Village, the World Bank, contractors Flame Tree Developments, the Labasa business community, residents, and stakeholders in Savusavu.

The airport remains a vital link for communities and businesses in Vanua Levu, with improved infrastructure expected to enhance service delivery.
