The nine-day carnival ended last Saturday.

Miss Duavata

Lavenia Vanessa Vuidreketi was crowned queen.

The emotional winner, sponsored by Hari’s Fairprice Supermarket, was pleasantly surprised by the prestigious title.

The 18-year-old lass from Saqani Cakaudrove reminded her fellow five queen contestants that they were all winners.

“The effort of 21 contestants from queen, king, princess and teen categories in raising awareness on how to stop crime will never go in vain,” Lavenia said.

“This is just the beginning and I hope we shall continue to raise awareness to our communities in Fiji.”

She is the second eldest of three siblings and aspire to become a doctor.

The advocacy message for the weeklong carnival was, teenage pregnancy can be solved before it ever becomes a problem.

“Spending a few hours, a day with your child is more helpful than punishment,” she said.

“Teenage pregnancy is a problem that should be resolved inside the family unit first.”

The Year 13 student of Shri Guru Nanak Khalsa College in Labasa thanked her mother, mentor, family, friends, sponsor and the carnival committee for their support.
