A family in Labasa hopes to get assistance after a fire yesterday morning completely destroyed their home and belongings.

The Prasad family of Coqeloa lost everything except for the clothes on their backs.

Home owner Rajendra Prasad, his wife, son, daughter-in-law and grandson, lived in the two-bedroom wooden home.

His son, Ranil Prasad, 35, said everything they owned and food items were reduced to ashes in minutes.

Ranil is employed in a sawmill while his father is a sugarcane farmer.

His wife and son were at home when the fire allegedly started at about 8:30am.

“When I got notified by my boss around 9am, I quickly rushed to my house, but, nothing could be saved because of the intensity of the fire,” Ranil said.

No one was injured.

“We only hope that people have the heart to help us during our darkest hour of need, please keep us in your prayers,” Mr Rajendra pleads.

They claim the loss of property cost about $80,000.

The family had moved from Sarava to Coqeloa three months ago.

“We will try to rebuild and I urge people to help us,” Ranila said.

He can be contacted on telephone numbers 9515766 or 8791775.

How the fire started

Mr Ranil claims the fire started from the electrical meter box.

“One our neighbours was rearing his cow when he saw the house in its initial stages of the fire,” he said.

“My wife was on the verandah and son sleeping in the room, luckily he woke up on time.”
