For the first time Shiri Guru Nanak Khalsa Primary School topped the Fiji Mathematics Competition (FMC) for Year Eight this year.

The school team, consisting of Danish Prasad, Aarav Chand, Taniska Lal, and Ishita Lata, solved 20 questions in 31 minutes at the Latter-Day Saints Church in Tamavua, Suva, last Saturday.

Team leader and school head girl, Taniska said they were confident to win the competition as they were the Year Eight winners at the Northern Zone competition.

“We spent a maximum of four weeks in preparation with the assistance of our teachers, Kamlesh Karan and Ashweeni Dutt,” Ms Lal said.

“There were 14 schools from all over Fiji participating in the competition and to be the overall winner is a big achievement.”

School head teacher Rajesh Kumar thanked the school manager, parents, teachers and families of other students for working together to collect funds to enable the students to travel to Suva and participate in the competition.

“It is the first time Year Eight students reached the highest level and to bring the top trophy home is a blessing in itself,” Mr Kumar said.

“At school we always encourage holistic development and this kind of competition motivates other students to identify their strength and do best in school.”
