The formalisation of the Vunika Settlement in Labasa has long been a dream for residents. This dream is finally becoming a reality.
Resident Shalen Chetty said the community had waited for decades, and witnessing the project’s launch yesterday at Vunika was a memorable moment.
Mr Chetty said he felt overwhelmed by the commencement of the housing formalisation project.

"I thank Government for finally hearing our plea and developing our area," he said.
The Ministry of Local Government and Housing will upgrade 141 lots and issue 99-year leases to first-time homeowners.
Residents continue to hope the project is completed swiftly, so that every household can secure a formal dwelling.
During the groundbreaking ceremony, Minister for Local Government and Housing Maciu Nalumisa urged residents to collaborate with contractors to ensure smooth implementation.
He said the project aims to provide standard housing for ordinary Fijians at an affordable cost.
“Every Fijian deserves to own a property which they can proudly call home,” he said.
The contractor for the project is LSR Investment PTE Limited, a Labasa-based company. Company director Laukesh Raj said the firm aims to complete the project within 18 months with strong community support during the development phase.
Mr Nalumisa highlighted that the benefits of formal housing include the ability for homeowners to access bank loans to expand or improve their homes.
Mr Raj said that owning a formal property remains a financial burden for many families.
Nonetheless, he added that the Vunika project would create new opportunities, especially for young people.
Mr Chetty said he was prepared to pay Labasa Town Council service fees.
“I am prepared to pay fees for services such as garbage collection and street lighting,” he said.
Mr Chetty added that the formalisation of the settlement would add value to the area and significantly improve residents’ living standards.
