The dredging of the Labasa River is now a priority for the newly-appointed special administrators who want to address flooding problems
Labasa Town Council special administrator chairperson, Paul Jaduram, said every effort would be made to ensure dredging happens.
“The river has not been dredged for many years, now it is an immediate need so that flooding in the future can be prevented,” Mr Jaduram said.

Every time there is a major flood, the business economy is impacted by the infiltration of floodwaters into nearby stores, which results in the loss of products and property.
“It is a matter of time to compile our suggestions and dialogue with relevant stakeholders to get the dredging started,” he said.

The previous administration, under the leadership of Doreen Robinson, had also focused on flood mitigation efforts.
With the impeding effects of climate change now at our doorsteps Mrs Robinson said every effort should be directed to prevent further challenges.
Mr Jaduram said Lions Park was expected to be upgraded to match the standards of other parks around the country.
“Enough benches will be available so that all visitors or townspeople feel a sense of pride in the space,” he said.
