In a major shakeup within the Opposition ranks, Member of Parliament Ketan Lal has formally withdrawn his support from the G15 opposition group, citing a commitment to integrity, fairness, and independent thinking.

Mr Lal announced his departure in a public statement over his Facebook page, revealing that he had communicated his decision in writing to the Speaker of Parliament on May 11 (Sunday).

He has also stepped down from his positions as Deputy Whip and Shadow Minister for Justice roles, he held under the G15 umbrella.

“This step has not come lightly,” Mr Lal said.

“I believe it is necessary to remain true to the values I uphold - integrity, fairness, and independent thinking as a servant of the people.”

The G15 group, led by the Leader of the Opposition Inia Seruiratu, represents a coalition of MPs who have, until now, presented a unified front against Government.

Mr Lal’s withdrawal marks the first significant defection from the group and signals growing ideological divergence within the Opposition block.

While stepping away from the G15, Mr Lal emphasised that he was not abandoning his role in the Opposition.

Now serving as a lone independent Opposition MP, he said: “I am not by party alliances but by the needs and voices of ordinary Fijians.

“I may now walk alone in Parliament, but I walk with the strength of your hopes and dreams behind me.”

He reaffirms his commitment to service-based leadership, drawing a sharp contrast with power-centric politics.

“Politics is not about positions or power. It is about people. It is about service,” he said.

While the G15 is yet to issue an official response, Mr Lal thanked his former colleagues for the experiences and lessons shared; he expressed his gratitude for their support during his time in the group.
