Landowners Want 50% Approval for Mining Licences in Namosi

Landowners of Namosi want more control in matters pertaining to mineral resources development in their province.

The province's regressive approach to mineral resource development in the province are outline in its submission on the draft Mineral Exploitation and Exploration Bill.

"As landowners, we recognise the potential economic benefits that mineral exploration and exploitation can bring to our country," Namosi landowners said.

"However, we also believe it is crucial to ensure that the interests of landowners and local communities are protected and respected throughout the process."

The council echoed the sentiments of resources owners of Navuniivi, Navitilevu, Ra, over the need for an iTaukei draft of the legislation, 50 per cent of landowner approval for special prospecting licences and mining leases, wide consultations and an all-out effort to ensure landowners fully comprehended the nature of such projects.

After consulting with the landowners and Tui Namosi Ratu Suliano Matanitobua, and as endorsed by the Namosi Provincial Council Meeting at the Pearl Hotel on Thursday 4 July, 2024, the province wants:

  •  The Government and the investor to jointly ensure the establishment of a local facility for the inspection of ores is established, which shall be used for the examination of ore samples removed from the area;
  •  investors to conduct tests on ore samples at the local facility, and provide results to native land-owning unit, who shall have the right to inspect and verify the results;
  •  The Government shall ensure that the local facility is equipped with adequate equipment and personnel to conduct thorough examinations of ore samples, and that the

Investor complies with all applicable laws and regulations in relation to mining operations.
