The new $7.5 million Laqere Market is scheduled to open by March, the Ministry of Local Government has announced.

Director Local Government Bindula Devi said finishing touches were being done.

She was responding to queries from vendors about the opening date.

“The construction is in the final phase. Only pending work now is the rear carpark and finishing work inside and outside the market,” Ms Devi said

She said the market would provide a safe environment for both vendors and consumers.

The market will have 470 market tables and 20 handicraft stalls.

Ms Devi said these would be distributed according to the request received from the market vendors.

The market would accommodate 240 to 250 vendors, 13 small business operators, three restaurants, a butcher shop and around 20 to 30 fish and kai (freshwater mussels) sellers.

“The priority will be given to those vendors who are selling on the roadside within the Nasinu Town,” she said.

Ms Devi said the new market would improve the traffic flow around the Nasinu area because currently there was ongoing traffic congestion due to the roadside vendors at Laqere.

Mereani Bati, a vendor from Vatuwaqa said the Laqere Market would give them relief from the weather.

“Selling on the roadside is getting harder every day because we hardly get customers,” she said.

Titilia Cavora from Nepani said the new market would end the suffering for many poor families who had no choice but to sell by roadside.
