Sonam Sandhaya Lata, 30 of Kashmir, Lautoka is blessed with her new home.
The Lautoka Central College teacher said she may be single but she was grateful that she was able to make the life-changing decision to apply for the Fijian Government’s home grant assistance under the Ministry of Housing and Community Development.
“I applied through Bred Bank, they did the application for me when I applied for my home loan. I applied in August and by October my loan officer had confirmed that I’ve been given the grant. So since I was buying a property I was eligible for $15000,” she said.

Ms Lata lives with her mother and niece and the home grant was an ideal opportunity for her as the sole breadwinner for her family.
“I chose this to assist me with my home loan payment. I wasn’t too sure I would get it when I applied so this was a surprise for me,” she said.
“It’s been a month now since I moved into the property. It’s a three-bedroom concrete house with dining and kitchen.”
Ms Lata said the initiative lessened the burden on families concerned about the requirements needed to build or buy a home
“This is a very good initiative by the Government, it helps those that are earning less to own a home. This grant comes in handy for those who cannot afford their deposit, so this serves as a down payment for the house,” she said.
Ms Lata thanked the Government for the initiative.
