Lauans Urged to Plant More Yaqona

The Lau Provincial Council is encouraged to motivate its people to plant more yaqona in preparation for an upcoming market.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Communication, and SMEs, Manoa Kamikamica, said the objective was to encourage more participation in commercial agriculture.
He reassured Fijians that they need not worry about finding markets or selling their products.

“The issue of market availability or buyers is something the government is addressing by seeking companies that can operate in Fiji and benefit Fijians,” Mr Kamikamica said.
“The United States market will soon open, and Pacific Island countries are urged to increase yaqona production. With kava bars expanding across the U.S, our aim is to produce high-quality yaqona that will meet the growing demand.
“I urge the province to plant more yaqona, as these markets present significant opportunities for us.”
Mr Kamikamica emphasised the importance of taking action rather than merely discussing plans.
He also updated the province on how Wonderful Company, the parent company of FIJI Water, could positively impact economic empowerment in Fiji.
Chairman of the Lau Provincial Council, Ratu Meli Saubulinayau, welcomed the initiative, noting that it would enhance financial and food security for the province’s residents.
