Any Lautoka resident found depositing waste on the roadsides without prior arrangements will be liable for a $40 on the spot fine.
This was the stern message given by the Lautoka City Council Chief Executive Officer, Mohammed Anees Khan.
Mr Khan said the enforcement of the fine was effective from yesterday following the revised collection and disposal of refuse, which was under the provisions of the Litter Act 2008.

“The council provides service for the collection and disposal of refuse on a user-pay basis,” Mr Khan said.
“The service is available to residents who wish to clean their compounds and properties. The citizens are advised to make prior arrangements with the council before placing the wastes for collection on roadsides by making the payments with the council’s cashier.”
He said all residents must co-operate to make the Sugar City cleaner and healthier. Lautoka Ratepayers Association president, Narayan Reddy is urging residents to do the right thing.
“The $40 fine is very little from my point of view; basically people are throwing rubbish inside the drains and the other issue that we have seen is people bringing their rubbish from rural areas and dumping it in town,” Mr Reddy said.
“Residents must communicate among themselves and help each other to avoid a fine.”
