Serving a life sentence has not demoralised Isoa Codrokadroka, who will participate in the Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) annual art exhibition next month.

The prospect of leaving loved ones behind and the harsh reality of facing an imprisoned life and losing his freedom weighed heavily in his mind.

However, amid the hardship, Mr Codrokadroka discovered an unforeseen talent for art.

Mr Codrokadroka, who hails from Dakuivuna Village, Wainibuka, Tailevu, has over the years become a prominent figure at the FCS Tagimoucia Art Gallery, standing out among the six talented artists.

Mr Codrokadroka’s journey took an unexpected turn in 2006 when he found himself behind bars. The first night and week in jail were described as incredibly challenging, with feelings of disbelief and the weight of the consequences of his actions looming large.

Grateful for the opportunity provided by the FCS, he expressed his gratitude to the organisers for not only being a source of income but also a source of personal growth and development.

Initially drawing inspiration from clips, he now creates art driven solely by his imagination.

Joining the art programme in 2013, Mr Codrokadroka’s artistic journey flourished under the guidance of Jane Ricketts and Irami Buli.

He learned to use the left side of the brain, the composition of the arts, and various skills and techniques. Art became a means of patience, positivity, concentration, and freedom from the confines of incarceration.

Achievements

His achievements include notable exhibitions such as the “Stronger than Winston Exhibition” in 2016, the “Christmas Vaka Viti Exhibition” in 2019, and participation in the “New Life Exhibition” at the Grand Pacific Hotel in 2021. This year marks his fifth exhibition, showcasing the progression and depth of his artistic skill.

Looking towards the future, Mr Codrokadroka aspires to pursue formal education in art and technology, particularly in graphic design.

His dream includes finding employment, starting a small business, and imparting his knowledge to the children in his village, ensuring that the flame of art continues to burn brightly.
