COVID-19 is a dreadful word for Litiana Saurara, the head girl of Krishna Vedic Primary School at Kuku, near Nausori Town.
While fellow prefects celebrated their selection yesterday, Litiana needed her aunty Sereana Kotoisuva’s shoulder to cry on.
They hugged as she sobbed for missing her grandparents who raised her since birth – Luke and Sereana Rokula. They died in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Their wish was for me to become a doctor to look after them when they grow old. Unfortunately, they died during COVID-19. I wish they are still alive to see me being badged as the head girl,” Litiana said.
Her mother is a civil servant working at Tukavesi on Vanua Levu.
“She is a bright girl and since kindergarten, she had been finishing first in her classes,” said her aunty Sereana.
“She moved in with us after her grandparents died and since joining Krishna Vedic from Nasinu Muslim last year, Liti has been making us proud with her school work.”
Head Boy Shares
Head boy Abhinav Prasad of Visama Feeder Road, continues the family legacy in the school.
His elder brother Ashnu Prasad and sister Ashni Devi were former prefects of the school. They are now in secondary school.
“Discipline is the key to become a good leader,” Abhinav said.
“By being disciplined, students will be able to concentrate in their studies, come to school daily and manage their time well. Krishna Vedic is known for producing top students, so I will make sure that I lead by example and pass with good marks to be enrolled at a good school next year.”
His father Mohammed Yusuf, a truck driver, said he moved his family from Nadi to Nausori five years ago for his children to get good education.
“I always tell them to avoid mischief and work hard,” he said.
“For Abhinav, I told him ‘If you want to be a leader, you have to know how to lead people, be a respected person and work hard.’
