The poor state of the Lomaloma Jetty in Vanuabalavu has caused injuries to users almost every time a boat berths there.

Villagers on the island fear more mishaps if Government continues to weld iron rods that run across the jetty, as a mending measure.

Sawana villager Jone Foiakau said the jetty was not a safe place to be.

“We go there to receive goods from our loved ones in Viti Levu, we do not want to get hurt,” he said.

“There have been injuries, we are always careful of our movements when on the jetty.”

Mr Foiakau believes the situation could lead to fatal incidents if the infrastructure is not fixed urgently.

It is the only jetty in Vanuabalavu.

“We have been requesting for it to be fixed for several years,” Mr Foiakau said.

“Welding works are not the permanent solution.”

Road

The condition of the road on the island is dangerous as well, said Narocivo Village headman Naro Paula Vura.

“We experience a lot of bumpy rides, it can be dangerous at times,” he said.

“We need Government’s help in our district.”
